brassicaceae

we’re bracing for cold weather here in central texas, and to celebrate the low 20’s we’re predicted to drop down to tonight i’d like to highlight one of my favorite families of winter-hardy plants, brassicaceae.  these beautifully blue-green, magenta and purple edible ornamentals give a lacy shot of wow to our otherwise dreary landscape of seasonally deprived color. relegating these jewels to the vegetable garden wouldn’t do so i have them planted throughout the gardens.  since they love cool weather, and even improve their flavor with a dose of frost i’m not going out of my way to protect them this evening.  but with tonight’s crystal clear & starry sky, we’re getting more than just a frost… i hope old man winter doesn’t prove me wrong.

  1. I love the colors on all those “brassy” plants and I hope Old Man Winter wasn’t too hard on them! My patio thermometer said 26 degrees this morning, so I’m betting you were even colder.

    • thanks les, et al.! my favorite this year are the chindori red and peacock varieties – super full and intricately cut.

  2. Brassies are some of my favorites too. I planted some Red Russian Kale in the Fall that was gorgeous and REALLY sweet after the frost, but the ‘coons and bunnies and deer got to it before I could. sigh. I’ll try again at the first sign of spring. how did you guys fare through the cold snap? xx

    • darn those coons, bunnies and deer…! i bet they’re looking forward to the first signs of spring too… stay warm up there!

  3. That’s a lotta kale! and family. Kohlrabi? Wow. Is “ornamental kale” edible r are these all veg varieties? How we miss the greens. Actually, the dinosaur kale and Red Russian are still standing sadly in the garden. Let them go as long as they could.

    • well, i figure if they’re in the same family they should be edible… no…? even if you throw a bit of olive oil on em and saute em up? that’s okay, i even plant the real vegetables for their looks.
